In our home, we make presents for each other, in lieu of worrying about what to buy for everyone—which often leads to gifts that just fill a box instead of leaving a lasting impression on a loved one’s heart.

A popular one this year was the no sew fleece blankets.  Kids as young as 7 in our home were making these.  It’s the perfect gift for those little hands as well as bigger ones that don’t sew.

And who wouldn’t want a soft, fuzzy blanket to cuddle up to?

Materials You’ll Need To Make A No Sew Blanket

  • 2 pieces of blanket material
  • Disappearing ink marker
  • Scissors or rotary cutter & mat ruler
  • Cutting mat (if using rotary cutter)

Last spring, I got some pieces of anti-pill fleece on sale, and have been holding on to them since then.  They are roughly 48” by 60” each.  The ones in these pictures happen to be from kits I found.

Although scissors will work in a pinch, a rotary cutter and mat ruler are really going to have the best results.

Assembling Your No Sew Blanket

Put your two pieces of fleece wrong sides together as evenly as possible.  Cut the edges so that your pieces are as close to exactly the same size as possible.

With your disappearing ink marker, draw lines along each edge 5 inches in.  After you’ve done this, you should have 5 inch squares in each corner.  Cut these out and discard.

Now cut your fringes along the sides in 1 inch intervals.  If you are working with young children, you may want to let them use scissors, or do the rotary cutting for them.  (I certainly did.)

Starting at one end, pick up the two matching pieces of fringe—one from the top piece and one from the bottom piece—and tie them together.  Move to the next fringe and continue all the way around the blanket.

I suggest once you’re done with all the fringes, to go through a second time, this time tightening the ties.

That’s it!

I’ve always done this when I have the time to do it in one setting.  I imagine doing half, and then folding it to finish the other half later might render uneven results.

The entire process takes 1-2 hours depending on the child doing it.  I firmly believe if I was to do it myself, it wouldn’t take nearly that long.

Could it be any easier?
